Alan Hunt: Not a truck driver, but as a driver of a manual car, to take it out of gear
without the clutch you need there to be no load on the transmission. So,
you take it out of gear the second you let off the power, because in that
split second the engine is putting no load on the transmission through
either power or engine braking.

heartbeat, and shifting without the clutch will be like breathing :). EASY.
Also in time, you will know what gear that you need to drop down do by your

splitter, unlike the range box which you are supposed to preselect. As soon
as you move the switch for the splitter it starts putting pressure on the
shift fork trying to make the shift, so over time you will do damage to the

cuzinitr: That's the smoothest work of shifting a 13 spd, that I'v seen on utube.
That's how I was shown how to shift one back in 1970, in a GMC Astrocab,
with a 318 jimmy v8. I was tought that the cluth was only to be used when
you were stopped,and that a good driver timed it so that you never had to

He starts off in 1st, then uses all of the gears when shifting up. So it's
1-2-3-4-5L-5H-6L-6H-7L-7H-8L-8H. A 13 speed has only splits in high range,
you can see it at 0:07. In american trucks, the gearbox has no synchromesh,
so you have to rev-match each gear when engaging. This makes skipping gears
a lot harder, especially for inexperienced drivers.

Neodar: how do you split gears without using the clutch? here in europe you'll have
to press the clutch before it splits the gear. I also so see a diffrent
shift pattern in american videos, could you tell me your shift pattern?
Here in europe it's: 3 > 5 > 6 > 7 > 7½ > 8 > 8½. it's a lot quicker since
you don't have to go through all of the lower gears.
