Greg French: You will need the reset disks that came with the computer. Copies should be
available under support that their web site.
ZeTaCk1: Excuse me sir but I am having trouble with my Dell Latitude E5420 (Laptop)
and i need to reboot it and I don't have a disc for it...how should i
handle this situation? A reply would gratefully make my day
Greg French: Could be a number of things from hardware failure to software corruption. I
usually keep an updated image and just restore from that. Windows is a
beast and requires a lot of maintenance to keep it running well. I
suggested my daughter and her husband get MACs and they are now very happy
now with their MACs.
Loyal Soilder: just spam the f8 key and it will open becuase it took multiple times for me
but it should work
FullUhFools: I've owned my gateway for 3 or 4 years. Just scan through all possible keys
at startup by holding ctrl+alt. and work your way through the F keys while
holding ctrl+alt. May take a few startups but you'll find it.
Greg French: @Go4br0keV2 No, the BIOS is firmware and resides in a chip on the
Greg French: Dell computers can be restored to factory default by pressing Ctrl-F11 at
boot-up, however this feature isn't present in the Latitude series. The
Latitude needs a System Recovery CD which comes with it, if it is lost, you
can order a new one from Dell.
Greg French: Your right, I have taught 100's and 100.s of students for more than 20
years. I maintained over 1000 computers at 7 different sites daily and I
did figure out how to keep things running without spending too much time on
one computer. I have also seen too many people that are determined to waste
valuable time trying to fix a sick Windows operating system. You need to
understand all Windows die a slow death and you cannot stop it only prolong
it. Windows has a badly designed registry.
etrax2000: @frenchge Thanks, but I believe you are more of an instructor with a set
defination of how to do things the expected way. I need more of a teacher
who will not question my results but will explain ways to do them
correctly. this problem reminds me of the space program where they
expecteed everyone to "Follow the manuals" if we all did that there would
be no space program. I need to "Kick the panels ,twist the wires and curse
softly until I get it right " .
hyperfuzefun: It is supposed to do that
Greg French: @FPSxPsycho You have either a hardware problem or a bad restore CD.
iceman2677: I want to reboot my HP laptop with F12, so that everything will be
reset/restored. Does this require any CD or a particular
key-code/password/registration-key? HP_Recovery (D) is allmost full, don't
know if it matters.
Greg French: The HP Recovery Manager is accessed from the Start Menu, or by pressing the
F11 key as soon as you power on. Recovery Manager can be used to restore to
factory specs and can also used to make Recovery Disks.
Gondorith: You need to take your old video card out, and put in your new one, you need
to install the new one with the disk you got with the video card.
Greg French: Some companies have made mods, but you still get a fresh start with the
factory defaults or out of the box condition when you do a restore. You
just have to remember to backup important data and files.
etrax2000: @frenchge I see myself as Will Robinson after he dismantled the Robot and
got into trouble by his father, especially when Pop saw all the wires and
parts and Will unable to get it back together, but Damm if he didn't get it
done by working all night in a hostile enviroment. I know that feeling all
too well, but I'll get it. I give it up to Christmas before I send it out
to a shop.meaning that will be my deadline, if not by Xmas, i ship out.
xXim3picXx: I have fake windows 7 if I do this will it dissapear?
Greg French: Your boot files should be on your hard drive (drive c: usually). If you are
unable to boot you will probably need to repair, replace, or restore your
boot files and maybe your operating system. HP should have either
restore/repair disks available at their site. Good luck, Greg
Obsidi0us: @frenchge nop it was windows .3
Greg French: Sounds like it's badly corrupted or the drive is going bad. You should try
and reformat the drive and/or do a clean install. Be sure to backup any
important files and data.

grey screen pops up and nothing happens and when i enter to start it normal
it loads and then sends me back to reapire ples reply back if u know whats
etrax2000: @frenchge I ran the scandisk ad it did recognioze some bad clusters on the
drive and reconfigured them to a safer place on the durve and marked the
damaged clusters as "Unsuable". the damaged files were the Himen sys and
Gui and others, the same ones that were having trouble when I tryied to
reinstall the win 3.11. i will give this just a few more tries before
sending it out to be fixed. it started out a fun thing to work on, but now
its becming frustrating.
TheKaoTiCBjornen123: Can Packardbell restore using F12?
jay SP: this doesnt work on my toshiba satellite c655
Greg French: Restore to factory default settings will bring the computer back to way it
was when you first got it. All programs installed by you and all data and
files will be removed. Make sure important data and files are saved to some
Othman LoveIslam: i have a windows xp desktop and if i click f12 it just says safe mode ...
safe mode with networking...safe mode with command promt and normal start
BlogGeekChic: Will Norton Ghost work if you already have a problem? My electricity
bleeped. When I turned my computer back on it was running super super slow.
I can boot it into safe mode and it runs fine. I scanned it with Spybot and
found no issues. I got an error code that a script is running and slowing
my computer down. Not sure what that means. I think something just happened
when the electricity bleeped. If I use Norton Ghost will it work or will it
copy the problem too?
WereAreSector: Thank you so much I was about to shoot myself in the face about this
Gondorith: There is no way you can get anything back unless you had everything backed
Greg French: @TheKaoTiCBjornen123 It's ctrl F10 on the Packardbell.
Amora: What to do when you have no cd but only a USB with the programs on it? I
don't know what to do after I click F12 and then my USB. After that it
JustNotMinecraft: dude u are so awesome thx alot for helping me :D
Greg French: There are beep codes during POST to identify failures on startup.
Prince Davis: im having a problem with my computer, when i turn it on my screen shows
blocks and multi colored lines, what could be the cause of this? please
Sebastian Lopez: will this help the pc in anyway...cause i ave a dell windows 7 i clean all
virus with malware bytes and its still slow idk why ='./
abbykadabbyx3: how to reset computer to factory setting i have windows vista on a acer
aspire t180 ?
Greg French: CloneZilla is the best free imaging program for setting up an easy restore.
etrax2000: @frenchge I discovered(just recently) by pressing dir /s you get to see
files inside of folders. I now see over 7000 files, when using dir I only
saw 488. I was prepared to use a format hard dirbe to start over ,but now I
must continue to use the hard method to retrieve files. My system is
confusied with win 3.10. win 3.11 win 95 and win 98. . I wish to find a
program that can be small enough to fit on a floppy disk in order to auto
correct the proper directoroies for either version of windows.
Greg French: You should be able to reboot to a CD/DVD to perform a new installation. If
you can't use F12 to change the boot options to boot from the CDROM you can
change it in the BIOS.
