Dora flores: I have a question. Will this work in a rural area? We are 9 miles from the tower with our Clear wifi but there is definitely wifi within 2 miles or so. Also somebody else posed a solution for what seems a more permanent type set-up that would allow for multiple computer usage... "why don't open up the USB receiver and solder the original antenna wire from the signal box to the little antenna in the receiver, then you open up the signal box and remove the electronics inside and solder the original connector to your antenna wire, this should boos the signal more because you increased the antenna, then the signals the dish will get will be send to the signal wire and if you want to you can connect another computer up to the same antenna" If I used this solution could I run 2 PCs, 3 tablets and my ROKU? I hope you can and or will answer, thanks!

Jeffrey Lubar: The point of this video ws to show you how to increase/boost wifi range. he used a satellite dish lmb to house the usb wnic which pointed its signal toward the dish which bounced the signal outward and boosted the signal strength and range manyfold. I also like the concept that he attached the pie dish to a camera trifold so he could stand it up and/or move it around. tilt, aim, shift positions but not keep it stationary or clamped to a wall or fence. I have a spare on im gonna build rather than use the strainer wrapped in tin foil i am currently using which btw works well to amplify my signal. I was gonna make a can-tenna, but like the pie dish effect better. hate the music. dont care about what he was babbling about, cause what he 'was' saying was effective enough. good job bigtalktheory1. thanks for the awesome video. armando garcia: can i use this to place usb near the antenna of a wifi repeater that has a weak 57% singnal? im trying to give my friend my wifi siganl who is 75ft from me with 3 walls in between us.....i tried replacing my linksys g router with a super high pwr amped wireless dual band n router 2.4/5ghz but even with the wifi repeater at his place it gets only 57%....but it really was supposed to be placed between both locations but i cant it would be outdoors...he needs 1 hardwired connection.

Bonnie Flory: What you are receiving at the moment is very very close, like your neighbor upstairs, downstairs, behind you or to side, which those signal you can receive without the dish and may be a better signal without the dish. You ask for references, if you google there are thousands of websites at the net, but what you need would be the scientific sites to do it right.

Joe Sitter: To optimize gain of such an antenna system, the dipole antenna inside the WiFi adapter must be at the focus of the reflector. It's very possible that yours is too close to the reflector. An error of only 1 or 2 millimeters can reduce your gain very significantly. A secondary reflector made of small bit of Al foil glued to the tip of the WiFi adapter can also increase gain. This needs to be 0.2 wavelength from the internal dipole. The Internet = looking in the window of a library. Go inside.

kmyost100: Yeah, this would work great from where he is but if you don't live in a city like that you've got to park that thing on the roof and fish around for a good signal. If somebody from the FCC drove by with one look they would be able to tell what you were up to and you could get fined.

Joe Sitter: The original television dipole was exactly at the focus of the reflector. Use great care to put the WiFi dipole in exactly the same spot. You may need to open the adapter to find the dipole. This extra work (just like school) will really pay off in the form of RF signal gain.

m1aws: OK, good point. If the dish occupies a 90deg angle then the signal will be approx 1/4x1/4 capture area of the isotropic source. The average isotropic aerial has 0db gain. Divide that by 16 and the gain in one direction from the aerial will be from nothing to 3db... Why the difference? Easy, if the reflected wave is 180deg out of phase to the source, the signal you want in your direction will equal nothing. Or can double to 3db if in phase. Impossible because the emitter is too long.

Alexander N: To make your satellite dish WiFi antenna even more powerful, first build a usb cantenna (look it up on Google and YouTube) using your usb dongle then place the cantenna at the focus of your dish aiming it into the dish for truly amazing range! Look up "satellite dish cantenna".

Phoenix NightOwl: Having been one of the three people who, along with Avantek making their "VSAT" micro-satellite terminal antennas the same way, I can vouch for the effectiveness of using a parabolic reflector & prime-focal feed for WiFi, since the freq. is nearly the same as we use for C-Band satellite systems; Remember that "unauthorized" use of someone else's WiFi signal IS illegal, so if you're near a Starbucks, McDonald's, etc., w/"Free WiFi", aim it at them, & this will work nicely without being illegal.
