Did this video help you?

Paul Bunyan: If Odin halts at "setup connection," here is the cause and the fix.

CAUSE:
When you connect your phone to your computer, Windows automatically
updates its drivers for your phone. The drivers that Windows
automatically installs, don't work with Odin.

HOW TO FIX IT:

First, get the right drivers running on Windows.

1. Download and install Kies for Captivate on your computer. The link
to get it is above, in the notes for the video (you must use Kies for
Captivate, not other versions of Kies). When it's installed, its
shortcut icon (to launch it) says "Samsung Kies mini". Click the
shortcut icon to run Kies.

2. Turn OFF (uncheck) USB debugging on your phone. If you don't know
what that is, you probably never turned it on, so don't worry about it.
But if you want to ensure it's unchecked, you can find it at Settings
> Applications > Development > USB debugging.

3. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable (remember,
Kies is running from step 1, above).

4. On your phone, a screen pops up, "Select USB mode." Tap "Kies
(Firmware update)", the top button.

5. Now, on your computer, drivers will start to download. It might
take 5 or 10 minutes, depending on your connection speed. ** Wait until
the drivers are finished downloading ** . Note that even after the
drivers are done downloading, Kies will still say "Please connect your
mobile phone." That never goes away, because you have an Infuse, not a
Captivate. When the drivers are finished downloading, close Kies.

Now, turn OFF automatic driver installation for Windows.

- Windows 10: See http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/stop-automatic-driver-updates-windows-10 - Windows XP: I had the same "setup connection" problem when I tried
Odin in Windows XP. Then I moved to Windows 10. Somebody else will
have to report how to turn off automatic driver updates in WinXP (I am a
OSX guy). I suppose you could just disconnect your internet at this
point, and if WinXP or whatever version of Windows you're using tries to
download a driver and reports that the download failed, it probably
gives you an option to ignore or abort the failed download. Either
ignore or abort would be fine; you just don't want to replace the
drivers you downloaded with Kies.
- When you're all done rooting your Infuse, remember to turn automatic
drivers updates back ON for Windows (a good idea for most people).

Now, you are all set to follow the steps shown in the video above. When
it works, it all goes very quickly, you will NOT see a stop at "setup
connection;" the upload to your phone will start a few seconds after you
hit the Start button in Odin. What you will see when the upload
starts, is the word "Kernel" in the top left of the Odin window, plus a
big green progress bar moving across Odin. On my computer, it took
about 10 minutes for the big green progress bar to finish.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
